Surprised am I myself to make a decision to switch to a track I am not fond of-- a work in charge of school administration. I thought I have many reasons to explain that. However, not until today do I know deep in my heart the reason contributes to the decision.

In today’s class, I was teaching kids how to write an essay. It was the first lesson on writing, so I thought it was necessary to expound on an essay structure. Then I made a tree diagram, along the way finding one–third of the students not centering on my lecturing. Angry? Insulted? Disrespected? Which one, or all involved in my feelings?

I am old to live in such a fast-changing world. The smart kids are bragging off their brilliance by reading science books, doing math in English class. Are they really that good enough to study their own? I don’t know. But one thing for sure is that when they need someone to correct their composition so that they could pass the life-and-death Big Test, they come to me. They care about their test result, instead of learning process. Therefore, the real concern for many students today is whether someone could cater to their needs instantly. As for respect, one thing I believe to ease tension among people, it has become the last they are concerned about. On the one hand, respect is something by which they could win no point. On the other hand, they define what respect mean; i.e. when I need you, I will show an attitude you need. The reverse side of the coin is when you are not needed, then respect means no more than a word.

So, neither anger nor insult did I feel. A feeling of helplessness is drifting around my minds. Perhaps, I could avoid such a negative emotion by giving fewer lessons. And so I choose the path that I once refused to stroll on.

Now we are the way to writing. The first stop is 'Topic Sentence." I want you to read the following article, which is the first link, and then answer some questions from the second link.

However, after the first monthly, we will have extra reading, and I will use the reading as part of assessment of the subsequent MONTHLY TESTS. 

         

There are two cases for you guys as reference on the way to be brilliant scholars. One is that one of your peers told me he didn’t hear what I had said: To write down the Chinese counterpart while given a vocabulary quiz. The other is that a young lady in the class was not engaged in classroom activity; instead, she was reading her novel. Perhaps, they are partly right. 

However, we may view their attitude from different aspects. A couple years ago, an article talked about a story, in which a young engineer lost his chance being promoted for his failure of listening attentively while his peers were bringing forth suggestions to their boss. The young engineer insisted he not hear his suggestion had been submitted. Even though the young engineer claimed that he did hear none about his idea put forth by others, he still ate bitter fruit for his distraction from listening to others. The case is very similar to that happening to your classmate. The rule I announced before the quiz went out of his mind. So, he had to shoulder the consequence. But I hope such an experience could teach him a lesson, one he could reward much more from. 

If you don’t like it, could you opt to forget about it? Well, think about our life. How many do we dislike to do? Then, we can list a plethora than we could that we are not actually fond of. In reality, those you don’t prefer, in many cases, build you a better person. So, leap out of the circle that limits your development. Psychologists coin a term for the circle, ‘comfort zone,’ which refers to what we are accustomed to conducting, or a situation we tend to remain in. Researchers indeed have found people who could really achieve their goals are those who tend to stay away from comfort zone. 

Good listening habits and the removal of your unwillingness to do what you don’t want are not easy, but once done will in turn lead you ahead of others. So, kids, try to change yourself while you may, because you are young.
